With experienced guides and a well-structured itinerary, the Machame Route offers a rewarding experience for those looking to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Your adventure begins with a transfer from Moshi to the Machame Gate (1,800 meters), where you’ll complete registration formalities. The trek begins through lush rainforests, with towering trees, ferns, and plenty of wildlife.
The path gradually ascends, and after about 5-7 hours of hiking, you will arrive at Machame Camp (3,000 meters). Enjoy dinner and rest at the camp after a long day of trekking.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
After breakfast, we continue the ascent, leaving the rainforest behind as the trail takes you into the moorlands. You will pass by giant heather and volcanic rock formations, with views of the Kibo Peak.
The hike takes about 4-6 hours, and you will reach Shira Camp (3,850 meters), located on a plateau with stunning views of the mountain and the surrounding landscape. Enjoy dinner and overnight at the camp.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Today’s trek involves climbing up to the Lava Tower (4,640 meters), which is a crucial acclimatization point. The route offers panoramic views of the glaciers and rugged terrain.
After reaching Lava Tower, we descend to Barranco Camp (3,960 meters). The descent helps with acclimatization, and you’ll feel more comfortable at the lower altitude. This day’s trek takes around 6-7 hours.
Enjoy dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp, known for its stunning views of the Barranco Wall and the Kibo peak.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day begins with a climb of the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical ascent that offers breathtaking views from the top. Once at the top, the path leads through the alpine desert as you make your way to Karanga Camp (4,035 meters).
The trek takes about 4-5 hours, and after reaching camp, you will have time to rest, recover, and enjoy the surrounding landscape. Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After breakfast, we continue the ascent towards Barafu Camp (4,640 meters), the final camp before the summit attempt. The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you move higher, with stunning views of the glaciers and peaks surrounding you.
Today’s trek is relatively short, taking about 3-4 hours, giving you plenty of time to rest at Barafu Camp before the summit night. You’ll have an early dinner and rest, preparing for the final push to the summit.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Descend to Mweka Camp
The summit attempt begins around midnight, and after a light snack, we start the climb in darkness. The path is steep and challenging, but as you approach Stella Point (5,739 meters), the first rays of sunlight will energize you for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters), the highest point in Africa.
After celebrating at the summit, we descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and breakfast, then continue the descent to Mweka Camp (3,100 meters). The descent is tiring, but the lower altitude and lush forest will be a welcome sight after the barren summit zone.
Enjoy dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
After breakfast, we make the final descent through the rainforest to the Mweka Gate (1,640 meters). Upon reaching the gate, you will receive your summit certificates and say goodbye to your guides and porters.
From Mweka Gate, we will transfer back to Moshi, where you will be dropped off at your hotel, marking the end of your incredible Kilimanjaro adventure.
